The Zingaro Nature Reserve

Shelters along the tracks, breathtaking panoramic views, coves tucked away for you to enjoy the sea in total peace. Surrounded by a mass of vegetation, with before you the crystal-clear blue and emerald green sea of Sicily, you will think you are in Paradise. You are completely right of course, that is exactly where you are.

The Santuario Church-Fortress and Watch Towers

The San Vito Lo Capo Santuario, possibly built as early as the 4th century at the time of the Emperor Diocletian, has been over many centuries a place of pilgrimage. Its aura was so strong that it was even a place warranting respect, almost a place of worship, for corsairs and pirates. It was the threats made by pirates and corsairs that led the local population to build the guard and watch towers that can still be seen today.

Palermo

A vast treasure of monuments narrate the history of the city, from the Norman period to the Gothic, during the Angevin domination, up to the Baroque. Many are the architectural styles to be admired in Palermo in buildings of great worth, such as the Palazzo dei Normanni, San Giovanni degli Eremiti, Castello della Zisa, alongside ultra modern skyscrapers and, in contrast, liberty pavilions.

Trapani

A suggestive historic centre with a host of buildings from different periods and of various architectural styles, numerous exquisite churches, such as the Church and College of the Jesuits; imposing military fortifications (extremely famous is the Ligny Tower), that witness the strategic importance of the city. Not to be missed in Trapani is a visit to the salt pans, a true spectacle of protected nature reserves and windmills.

The Egadi Islands

Awaiting you at just 7km from Trapani is the archipelago of the Egadi Islands, of which Favignana is the largest island. Here you will find the old tuna factory, which has been restored but is no longer connected with tuna fishing (the mattanza). Today it is open to the public free-of-charge and there are guided tours of the building giving fascinating accounts of the ancient tuna fishing practice and the people involved in its history.
